So… what’s up?
Here we go again! Thank you to all who have read and subscribed. Since last month’s newsletter, I’ve really taken the time to learn and grow thanks to helpful feedback (see below).
Hear you loud and clear, mom. I’m brainstorming some contests and serial content as we speak:
Contest: guess what number I’m thinking of–no, it’s not that. Or that. WRONG! Winner gets a sense of mild clairvoyance…. But you knew that already, didn’t you?
Contest: find the worst possible photo of me online. Winner? Me. I’m going to scrub the internet of that image (or include it in the next newsletter).
Serial: My fave is Fruity Pebbles.* It feels like the queerest breakfast serial (this is so dumb, I’m sorry)
Serial: Every month I drop one trauma (possible paid subscription posts?)
Contest: Come up with a good contest to please mother. She’s losing interest, come on!!!
*Ok just one aside re: Fruity Pebbles. Incredible how The Flintstones have maintained their cultural relevance over generations via gummy vitamins and cereal. I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched The Flintstones.**
**An aside about The Flintstones: I got my picture in MAD Magazine in 2008 by convincing Joe Biden to pose with a copy of MAD at an Obama fundraiser. When they printed my photo, they sent me a prize package that included the entire Flintstones box set and the DVD of Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I sold the Flintstones box set at Amoeba Music on Haight Street. I can’t remember what I spent the money I made from it on, but probably something dumb from ThinkGeek… (truly an era–if you know, you know). The Narnia DVD is still in the basement of my parents’ house. Never been watched. As is its twisted fate.
I think this month’s serial will be…
will my mother approve of newsletter two? Find out next month!
What have I been working on?
Queer Window – February 24th, 9:30pm EST – Squirrel Comedy Theatre
I am writing and acting for a queer sketch show called Queer Window! It’s going to stream via The Squirrel Theater’s Twitch page (here). No ticket required. Twitch can be viewed on a browser or via an app on your phone. Also, sketches from the show will be uploaded to YouTube, and I’ll share those in next month’s newsletter! I learned some basic animation to help bring my sketch to life, so I’m really psyched to see it all come together. Hopefully this will become a recurring show!! Feel free to reply if you have any questions about how to stream.
Here’s my most recent satire pieces for Awf!
These Two Kids In a Trench Coat Use They Pronouns (frankly one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written because it’s just silly and absurd).
Quiz: Are You A Top, A Bottom, Or A White Supremacist Storming The Capitol?
More pieces to come. Check my Twitter and Instagram to get articles right when they drop.
I am about to release the first of my comedy songs, “The Self-Care Song.” It’s about depression (but funny), so probably relatable to lots of us these days ahahahaha. Here’s a newsletter-exclusive peek at some of the lyrics:
Things they are so hard right now, there’s so much to despair
Though it’s good to care for others… don’t forget self-care.
Light a scented candle, to cover up your stench,
Or better yet, use a bath bomb, so you’ll finally take a bath.
Put on a sheet mask, ‘cause your pores look like swiss cheese,
Then take a good look in the mirror–actually, no thank you please!
This is the self-care song,
Believe in yourself, do the bare minimum,
Treat yourself to some water, indulge in eating food,
So much self-caring to do.
I hope I have whetted your appetite! Keep your eyes peeled for the song, as I’ll release it on social media first but I will also link it in next month’s newsletter!
What am I watching?
Blown Away on Netflix. Season 2 just dropped, and I devoured it. It’s so intense and beautiful. Glass blowing is truly mind blowing (see what I did there). Watch it.
Honorable mention: just started The Mandalorian and I am going to watch all of it just because Baby Yoda is absolutely the cutest thing ever. He was not overhyped or overrated. The right amount of hype and RATED. I know I am totally behind on this BUT goddamn, look at this adorable thing????
Who’s making me laugh?
Patti Harrison! One of my favorite absurdist comedians! She’s incredible in a sketch on the Netflix series I Think You Should Leave (which I THINK YOU SHOULD WATCH). She’s got hilarious bit parts on other shows, like Shrill on Hulu (also a rec of mine). Also, she’s a writer for Big Mouth!!!
I really especially wanted to mention Patti because I just saw her in a film, Together Together, at this year’s virtual Sundance Fest. The cast included Ed Helms, Julio Torres, and Tig Notaro, and it was filmed right where I grew up in Noe Valley in SF, so it really checked all the boxes for me. It’s funny and poignant, and Patti really nailed the emotionality and the humor. I’m so excited for the film to be distributed so more people can get a chance to see Patti’s full range!
And that’s that!
Another one bites the dust. Thank you for joining me in the fun haus.
Xoxo, Loie
